Refuge Builder Help |
Hint 1. Read the question thoroughly before you attempt to pick the correct refuge design. Each scenario has constraints that are important to correctly answering the question. 2. How do I use the Refuge Builder?
Once your mouse arrow is over the plot image:
The plot designs will cycle as you click on the plot design. The plot image represents an aerial view of your plot, as seen from far above. 3. To receive a response. Once you are satisfied with your refuge design choice you may click on the button below the plot image labeled "Plant". Once you have pushed the "Plant" button you will receive a response in the bottom frame. If you receive a Correct response you will be given a short summary of your answer along with a button labeled "Next Problem". Push the next problem button to go to the next scenario. If you receive a Try Again response you will be given a summary of your selection along with a hint for a better response. 4. What do the different colors represent? Solid Green always represents Bt corn. Yellow always represents non-Bt corn refuge. Dark Green and Aqua usually represent a neighbor’s field or other crop type. Brown represents the absence of a crop. 5. Why are there so few refuge designs per scenario? The authors of the Refuge Builder recognize that there is literally hundreds of plot designs possible in a real-life situation. However, because of the time involved in programming the Refuge Builder the authors chose to limit the plot designs for each scenario. Whenever possible the authors have chosen plot designs that will both challenge and inform the user. 6. I disagree with the answer to your scenario. The authors recognize that not all plot design evaluations can be answered with a Correct or Incorrect response. Some of the refuge designs for the scenarios may be more correct or incorrect in a real-life situation, where factors such as growing region and other geographical anomalies play an important role in refuge design. The Refuge Builder always lists what the authors believe as the best choice/s for each scenario. 7. I don’t understand how hoppers and planter types play a role in strip refuge design? Please read this article on refuge design for Bt corn. 8. I can’t find or see something on the screen? Try using the scroll buttons on the right side of your screen. There should be one for both the top and bottom frames. 9. I believe that you have left important aspects of refuge management out of the Refuge Builder. The Refuge Builder is not intended to be a comprehensive teaching tool covering every aspect of refuge management. Its purpose is to teach only the basics of refuge management. 10. Why does the Refuge Builder take so long to load? The Refuge Builder uses over 60 images and 100+ Web pages. Each image is loaded into your computer's cache when you access a scenario for the first time. Loading images into your computer's cache is time consuming initially, however, the next time you access the Refuge Builder the loaded images can be directly accessed from your cache saving valuable time. This should remain true until your computer's cache is emptied. |
